Beach volleyball @ Pismo Beach

This post used to contain pictures, but due to new storage limitations from WordPress, I had to fix the problem and decided to create a new blog that works as an archive for all the posts from my two years in California. This full post can be found here.

I’m sorry my 25 readers (which is more than last year, yay!), my blog has been dead because I’ve been too tired to update. So, I think Wednesday was the last day I updated. Since then I’ve gotten a 15 page paper due on Thursday next week, been to downtown again, walked all the way back and stopped to refill energy with a donut at the 24/7 donut shop. On Friday I baked muffins and cupcakes with my roomies and people from the building came and said hello. A great way to meet people. We had about 100 and we actually got rid of all of them.

Cupcake frosting with LaurenOne of my roommates, Lauren :).

In the evening on Friday we went to a house party and I have now something more on my experience list. The party got rolled, which means that the police came and asked everyone to leave. It was kinda weird and I really don’t understand how that works here, because it seems like all the house parties get rolled, even if non of the neighbors are home (like yesterday). The police earns money from it, so I guess that’s why they prioritize parties. It was only 23:30 so we headed back to PCV and hung out with some guys on the fourth floor playing Cards Against Humanity. The most fun game ever.

This morning I went to Pismo Beach with Ryan, Johanna och Franzi which is a German exchange student. We played beach volleyball for like three hours. At first not very serious, just to get warmed up. I ended up playing my last game with some pretty good players, that was fun. It was too bad though that the wind is always coming to the beach here at like noon.

Pismo Beach

On our way home we had lunch at High Street Deli which is SLO’s best sandwhich place according to pretty much everyone. It was very good and much needed after so many hours in the sand. It felt good to be back, but it’s gonna take a while to get into playing again.

At home I took a shower and then a too long nap. So I didn’t have time to study… I felt a little bad actually. But I am going up at 8:30am tomorrow to write on my paper about the High-Speed Rail in California. It is a group project, but it is still a lot of pages to write. I think it will be done pretty fast though as soon as I just get into it, which I will do tomorrow. I think I am meeting up with my group in Engineering Transportation sometime during the day as well to figure out what our project this quarter should be about. The 15 page paper of the California HSR is in Transportation Engineering Lab. I also have a lot of reading to do, so that’s what I will do tomorrow. I am also checking to see if anyone is going grocery shopping. I finally have a few ideas of food I want to cook. I am thinking spaghetti and meatsauce tomorrow. Or maybe Monday.

After the shower, nap and dinner (the other half of the delicious sandwhich) I went to Grover Beach with a bunch from my WoW-group to hang out. At Grover Beach it is okay to drive with the cars on the sand and it is a huuuge beach and you can just put the bonfire right in the sand. It was a very nice evening! I smell a lot of smoke right now, but it was worth it. My roomies were up and running when I got back at like 23:30. They were hyper from lack of sleep. Haha. I like them, they are so sweet and so funny. I am gonna miss them so much when I have to leave (way too soon!).

Bonfire at Grover Beach

I guess I should go to bed now so I won’t be too tired to get up at 8:30 tomorrow…

1st+2nd day of class and Pint Night

This post used to contain pictures, but due to new storage limitations from WordPress, I had to fix the problem and decided to create a new blog that works as an archive for all the posts from my two years in California. This full post can be found here.

I’ve spent two days in school now and I have gone to one of each class. And I like it. Yesterday morning I had Fundamentals of Transportation Engineering at 7:40am to 9am. The teacher seems to be really good and the topic is interesting too. I actually had no idea what I signed up for months ago. The teacher introduced me and Johanna in front of the whole class because we were from Sweden and that he was probably gonna ask us during class sometimes how it works with transportation in Sweden.

At 9:10 I had to find my next class. It wasn’t too hard but I was one of the last to get there so I had to sit in a left-hand seat. The tables you have in front of your chair in the lecture hall and it is just a tiny piece of table you fold up from the armrest and a few have a table on the left side, so that was weird. That class was History of World Architecture : Prehistory-Middle Ages. It is a fun subject. But I heard it is a tough class, much to remember and read. But I will probably be fine. The teacher is very monotone when he speaks though which makes two hours extra long. But I’m sure the multiple choice tests will be easy enough.

I went home after that, had a quinoa salad (so far I have actually been healthy!), and then went to my last class for the day which was a lab in Fundamentals of Transportation Engineering. It is two different classes for some reason. The teacher was nice. He called everyone’s names and he asked most of us if we preferred what he said or a nickname. So he asked me if I wanted to be called Alex or Alexandra. I said Alex since everyone here knows me by that name. Alex is a very very common name here. I meet Alex’s all the time. In the lab we were just doing a little research about the Interstate Highway System. It took a while for me, I need to get used to this. But I hope it was okay.

After that I went home, hung out at Ryan’s for a bit before we headed downtown with Johanna. Taco Tuesday offered $1.50 tacos and $3.50 margaraitas. That was fun. Then we went to trivia night at Woodstock with some of Ryan’s friends and then we headed to SLO Brew where we spent most of the evening. Apparently a guy from LMFAO was there so the line in was long, but it went really fast anyway. Not many people from our WoW-group was there but a few and it was a nice evening. So Pint Night works like this. Every Tuesday a few bars downtown sells a pint of beer for $1-3 depending on what beer you want. You first buy your own glass and then you just reuse that all the time. Cider was available for $3 which was awesome! I met a girl named Martina there last night and I met her in San Diego last year when she was roommates with Hanna (who did this exchange program two years ago). She was also an international student back then and now she is back for her graduate degree. I had no idea she was back and when I saw her, that was a nice surprise. She is very nice. I wasn’t too drunk but I still walked the bike home. I got home at 3am. And I am so glad I don’t have any early classes on Wednesday’s.

This morning I skyped with mom for the first time since I got here. It felt so normal, like I never left San Diego. Was I ever home in Sweden?

After that I went to the pool here in PCV and did a lot of reading. Here it is apparently normal to read what the teacher says before class to be prepared. So I spent a few hours by the pool reading about architecture history. I think I got a little tan. Not any redness at all. I think I am getting used to the sun here which is good. Of course I had a lot of sunscreen on but my first weekend here I got burned anyway.

Studying at the pool

I got home, took a shower, had another salad for dinner (I don’t have that much food yet) and then headed to my last class, which is Sustainable Environments. That class will be so much fun. We are gonna watch a lot of movies, he encourage us to listen to music like Bob Marley and Ramones (he put links to songs on the course webpage). And we only have three hours of class every week instead of four (it is a four credit class). So those last ten hours that’s missing we are going on field trips. The teacher gave us a lot of suggestions and after each we have to write a paper. On Monday I am going to a documentary called Cowspiracy, which is showed downtown and then I will go to a solar panel thing and a landfill and maybe something else. I need ten hours. We talked to the teacher afterwards and he seems really cool. I need to remember to bring a cup of coffee or something next time though. I got pretty tired and I don’t wanna fall asleep during class.

Tomorrow’s another Tuesday. Thursday’s and Tuesday’s look exactly the same. I don’t look forward to going up at 6am to go to class at 7:40… Goodnight!

Last day of WoW

This post used to contain pictures, but due to new storage limitations from WordPress, I had to fix the problem and decided to create a new blog that works as an archive for all the posts from my two years in California. This full post can be found here.

So, yesterday was last day of WoW. It was sad. Even after just a week we all got so close and it is weird not hanging out every hour of every day. I will of course still see them but it will not be the same. We have talked about having reunions every Sunday or something.

The day started with a goodbye ceremony in the Performing Arts Center. People talked about what was amazing with WoW and we watched a movie with pictures from the week. We had a goodbye talk and we took some photos. After that me and Ryan were club buddies and went around campus talking to different clubs and signed up for a few. I signed up for Global Food Tasting, Beach Volleyball, Surfing, Engineers without Borders, Civil Engineers Association, Poly Escapes and probably some more which I don’t remember. Poly Escapes seems awesome, they have bigger trips pretty often during the quarter. I am on the waiting list to a stand up paddling tour in Yosemite Valley and I just signed up for a weekend in Ventura where we will surf and camp on the beach. I am super excited! And I really hope someone from the Yosemite trip will cancel so I might have a chance at getting that spot. Johanna and another guy from Sweden, Marcus, already signed up.

In the afternoon I went home with Johanna and we baked a Swedish mudpie for the international potluck. There were a lot of people there, maybe 40-50. All the Swedish people brought desserts, like carrot cake and chocolate balls. It was a nice evening but we left at 6pm something, it was getting cold. When I got home, super sweaty and tired after the long bikeride up the hills there were free pancakes in the courtyard. I didn’t have any, but I stood in the extremely long line with Ryan and his roommates. After that I took a quick shower and went to hang out with some people Ryan knows out in the middle of nowhere for a couple of hours. It was nice. And since it wasn’t that late when we got back we watched the latest episode of Doctor Who.

Today was a long day too. Classes started today, but not for me. I am off every Monday and Friday this quarter and I only have one class (7-10pm) on Wednesday’s. Tuesday’s and Thursday’s though are pretty full and they look exactly the same, 7:40am – 6pm. I have a big four hour hole in the middle though, which will be perfect for lunch and homework.

Anyway, I had to get up a bit early to go to an international advising appointment. I talked to Susan Tripp, the one I have been in contact with the whole summer, and I got my DS-2019 signed so I can leave the country when I will go to like the Caribbean and Mexico and Canada.

After that I went to the Rec Center (the huuuuuge gym) and got my code so I can go there. You use your code and your hand to go in. Pretty modern and cool. Then I sat at the UU Plaza for an hour, eating a small breakfast and reading for an hour before Johanna was done with spinning class. Then we went textbook shopping. I spent $260 in that store on books, notebooks, folders and a hoodie.

I didn’t have anything to do so I went with Johanna to downtown. I was looking for a pair of sandals and a backpack. I found neither but I did find three belts. The way home was horrible. The two books for Fundamentals of Transportation Engineering and World Architecture History were both very heavy so I walked the bike almost all the way back from Johanna’s where I left my things. At home me and my roommates (Rachel, Kelsey and Lauren) talked about rules we want to have, kinda made like a roommate agreement. Then I was just chilling, our door was open so some people stopped when walking by to talk for a bit. It was nice.

Now it is past midnight and I have to get up at 6am to go to class at 7:40… I am nervous but also very excited to start school again.

GoatsWe had goats outside our living room today. There are lots of animals around here, we also have deers and horses and I think cows maybe?

5th day of WoW

This post used to contain pictures, but due to new storage limitations from WordPress, I had to fix the problem and decided to create a new blog that works as an archive for all the posts from my two years in California. This full post can be found here.

Today was pretty chill. We met up at 10:45 am to go to an Awareness gallery about all the hard things about college (and life in general) like body image, stress, mental health, alcohol and abusiveness. It was a very well done exhibition.

We had lunch after that with Thanksgiving food. That was a bit weird, but good. I went back to my room to take a nap before going to an event where free kitchen things were handed out. My WoW group went hiking up Bishop’s instead. I got a whole bag of things I needed for the apartment, like silverware (I can now return the ones I bought), a teacup, a small pot, some plates, a bowl and some kitchen towels. There were like 7 different tables and you could just take whatever you wanted. Super awesome!

I had a little time at home after that before going to meet up with Ryan and the international students to watch a college football game. It was our Mustangs against Portland Vikings. Ryan told med during the first two quarters what was happening and why and what all the numbers meant. I actually think I have a pretty good idea how American football works now! But at half time, when the Mustangs had done 3 touchdowns including 3 field goals (21-0) we decided to leave and join up with the WoW group to eat dinner at Firestone downtown. I am so glad I tagged a long, the pulled pork sandwhich I had there was the best I’ve ever had!!

Then we went back to PCV to change into warmer clothes and then went to the Cayucos Beach where all the transfer students had a bonfire evening. I met Ryan’s best friend and he introduced me as his closest friend her in SLO. We had s’mores, talked to a few people. It was hard socializing when you couldn’t see faces. We left at like 1am and I fell asleep in the car on the way back and now I should probably go to sleep. We are meeting at 9am tomorrow, and I need to get up five hours from now.

So goodnight everyone! (or good morning Sweden)

4th day of WoW

This post used to contain pictures, but due to new storage limitations from WordPress, I had to fix the problem and decided to create a new blog that works as an archive for all the posts from my two years in California. This full post can be found here.

I was too tired to update last night. It was another long day with lots of fun activities. So we met up at 9 am and then we were all separated so we could go to advisors meetings with our different colleges (I am in College of Engineering, but there are also College of Agriculture, Liberal Arts and all thos different majors). It was okay, but I guess I could have slept for another hour. At the end of that there was a raffle and for once I actually won. I got a bag (you want bags here, all the free bags you can get is awesome since you don’t get free bags in the stores) with stuff in it. The best thing was post-it notes, I actually needed that.

At 10:15 we met up at our SMP (Specia Meeting Place) to go do archery. I’ve never done it and was so excited to do it. It was really fun, but hard. Because of my beach volleyball skills I had an okay posture, but the results weren’t as good.

Archery ArcheryMy WoW group <3.

Back to campus after an hour or so so I could eat a quick lunch with Johanna before we went to the mandatory international student orientation. We randomly met up with like 8 other Swedish students on the way there. That meeting was kinda silly. It was nice to get a face on Susan Tripp, a woman I’ve been emailing this whole summer. Then we were divided into smaller groups and got information from an IPC. They told us things I already know, like the cultur here. It was a bit unecessary in my opinion, but I don’t think I missed anything with WoW.

Meet up at SMP again to go bouldering which is rock  climbing but without ropes so it’s not that high. It was fun, but my arms were like spaghetti afterwards. I managed to reach the top on two different V0’s which is the easiest path to climb. The higher number, the harder it is. For me a 0 was ”lagom”.

Bouldering Bouldering

Our next thing on the agenda was dinner which was just salad and meat. And let’s see…. What was after that… We do so much stuff it’s hard to remember what we did. It must have been bowling though. I bowled with four guys from the group. I am actually not good at bowling, but those guys were not good at all, so I won with big marigins. It was very fun, not winning, but playing with them :).

Flight simulatorOh yeah, we went for half an hour to the flight simulator club too. It was fun but nothing for me. Bowling

We had to hurry to our next thing which was inside the Performing Arts Center which is also on campus (oh yeah, the only bowling alley in SLO is on Cal Poly campus). It was a improv comedy thing with a group of students from school. It was called Smile and Nod. They were really good and came up with funny things right on the spot. We yelled suggestions for them to do, and they did a really good job. I laughed a lot last night as well!

And then we were supposed to play glow in the dark capture the flag with other transfer groups, but none of us didn’t really want to do it. I was up for it, even if it was like 11pm and I was exhausted. I somehow had energy. We decided to go to our last thing for the day instead, which was SLOdocu, the donut shop that is open 24/7. I can count how many donuts I’ve had on one hand, and I am impressed bu myself that I haven’t had more. They are so delicious. I had an old fashioned glazed with maple. It was the tiniest they had.

We walked back to Cal Poly and said goodbye. I wasn’t that tired and Ryan had just figured out how to watch Doctor Who from the BBC UK website so I stayed at his place for an hour to watch the next episode I hadn’t seen. There is another out, and the fifth episode of the season is aired tomorrow night. I am so glad I can watch Doctor Who this year, I was afraid that I couldn’t since it is a Brittish show. The American shows you can watch from the network’s website here in the US.

I got home around 1:30am and fell asleep instantly. Today there are a lot of things on the agenda as well, but I don’t have time to mention any of it now, I need to eat breakfast, get dressed and go to SMP to start up the day. It’s great that we are gonna meet up at 10:45 today instead of 8:15.

3rd day of WoW

This post used to contain pictures, but due to new storage limitations from WordPress, I had to fix the problem and decided to create a new blog that works as an archive for all the posts from my two years in California. This full post can be found here.

Halfway through WoW now. Like all the other days it was full of activities, and I took a break for like 7 hours and still did a ton of stuff. The day started with a small hike up on the mountain behind PCV. Up there they have something called the Architecture Graveyard where architects at Cal Poly put their senior projects many many years ago. It was cool and not too bad of a morning hike. I was extremely tired though after just 5 hours of sleep so it was a bit rough. It also rained a little during the hike, that was nice.

Architecture Graveyard Architecture Graveyard Architecture Graveyard Architecture GraveyardThis is why California is called the Golden State. Not because of the God Rush back in the days and not because of the constant sun, but because everything dies and it gets golden. Architecture GraveyardI heard someone say that the graveyard was about 40-50 years old. Poly Canyon Village, PCVThis is my village where I live. I am in the grey building farthest to the right in this picture. A LOT of students live here, and there are so many other student housing on campus. 19 000 students go to Cal Poly.

After that I was planning on going to the beach with Ryan (a guy from my WoW group), one of my roomies, a German girl named Carolin (who I met at the hostel this weekend and then have been seeing a few times after that at the school) and Johanna. The weather was really bad though, okay, not really bad, I am still in California. But it wasn’t beach weather, so we decided to go to Target and do some shopping instead. I bought a lot of things to the apartment for all of us but also stuff for me, like detergent and a laundry bag. Then we did some grocery shopping so now I finally have some food on my shelves. Feels good!

When I got home at like 1pm I called Hertz about the extra charge they took for a car upgrade which I wasn’t aware of. Apparently it was an upgrade but no one told me that, nothing at all. Just giving me my reciept without telling me what it was about and just let me sign without knowing. I should have read it through or something, but he shouldn’t have taken advantage of me as a foreigner after I just got off a real long flight from half across the world. Not okay!! So I won’t get those $40 back, but the lady on the phone heard how upset I was so she is gonna give $20 back. It’s better than nothing, but I should have had it all back… Stupid Hertz!

My next thing I really needed to do was learn how to transfer money from my Swedish account to my American one. It is easier said than done. I called the bank to ask for the SWIFT number, but I also needed a ”bankkontorskod” which I didn’t know about because it said either a BIC/SWIFT number OR a bank office code. I am guessing that that code is the same as Wire Routing Number, but I am not sure. So I made a test transfer of $2 and the fees for that will probably be $20. But I would rather lose about $20 instead of $5000. If this works then that would be great, I will transfer some of the money I have and pay all the rents for the fall quarter at one time so I don’t have to worry about nothaving enough money. I also don’t know how long it takes for money to transfer from Sweden to USA. I hope it is not too long. The 1st of October is getting closer.

That banking business took a lot of time so I only had time for a shower before I needed to leave. First I stopped by Ryan’s (who’s just five doors down the corridor) and had a cup of tea and then we headed to dinner on campus.

When we were done eating and everyone was there we took the bus to downtown. I learned from one of the leaders how to use the SLO transit app and the only thing I need to do now is learn which routes goes to where and then I am good to go. So, every Thursday there is a Farmer’s Market downtown. The whole main street is shut off and stalls cover the whole street. A lot of foods and other things, especially fruits and vegetables. I didn’t buy anything, we only had an hour there. Then we walked back to campus where we sat for a while before heading to the Rec Center where we were gonna watch a hypnotist show. That was so hilarious. He took up a bunch of people from the crowd on the podium, probably like 30. And then he had complete control over them for the next more than an hour probably. He made them smell imaginary farts, made them sing and perform Britney Spears and Lady Gaga songs and other fun things. I laughed so hard my tummy hurt! I had a hard time hearing what he said though so I missed most of the things, so I should probably try and see another one again sometime.

Hypnotist showThese guys were dancing ballet. So pretty and magical!

We got dismissed at 00:30 and now, an hour later, it is definitely time to go to bed. On tomorrow’s schedule is archery, bouldering, glow in the dark capture the flag, donuts and I think they said bowling as well. I am also going to a mandatory international student orientation for an hour during the day. I don’t know what I’m gonna miss, I know it is not archery which I am so glad for. I’ve always wanted to try archery.

Now after a few days with the people in the group it feels much better, we are getting to know eachother and are having such a fun time. At least I am :).

2nd day of WoW

This post used to contain pictures, but due to new storage limitations from WordPress, I had to fix the problem and decided to create a new blog that works as an archive for all the posts from my two years in California. This full post can be found here.

Another fun and very eventful day is over. I am more tired than ever and will make this quick. The day started with a information meeting with the College of Engineering and then the Civil Engineer department. It wasn’t that interesting, they went through all the CE clubs and we were introduced to all the faculty members.

Lunch with the department after that and I and Johanna talked to the professor we are gonna have in our first course on Tuesday morning, Fundamentals of Transportation Engineering. He seemed cool.

Back home to leave the bike and then to the meeting point for our WoW group. Next on the agenda was kayaking. That was my first time and I went with a guy in my group named Charlie who is from Columbus, Ohio (where I have relatives). We didn’t fall in which was good because the blue sky was gone out over Morro Bay. It was very very dizzy and actually a bit cold. It was fun kayaking though and we saw a lot of sea lions (of course) but also a lot of sea otters. I’ve never seen otters in the wildlife, so it was so cool to see them now. There were a group of like 10 of them lying on their backs grooming and rolling around in the water. So amazing to see! They were big though, probably a meter in length.

Our next thing was a barbecue for all the transfer students. We got hamburger. Back home to change clothes for the next activity WoW-A-Rama. I walked with a guy named Ryan and we talked a lot about everything. We decided that we wanted to ditch WoW tomorrow during the day and hang out at the beach instead. I think I need to take a while off and just relax.

The WoW-A-Rama was fun! 5000 Wowies on the football field (or whatever type of field it was) and we had a leader on a podium telling us to do weird stuff. It was three hours of doing stupid things. We were close to people we have never met before but it was fine because everyone did it. First of all we had to be in straight lines and we had to remember exactly where because after doing a couple of games we were gonna form that exact line again. It was chaos when everyone were trying to find their spot after being away from it for a while. We got paired up with tons of different people, one time on of us was a Mustang and the other person should go on that first person’s back and shoot with the hands up in the air. My Mustang was called Alex as well. He was cute, but he had a girlfriend since he danced when the leader asked if we did (he also asked a lot of other questions). If you agreed you should dance, so you would get to know the people around you. The last thing we did was to find everyone on the field who were born in the same month as you. So we all ran around with fingers in the air representing the number of our month. When everyone was gathered we were divided into two circles, one inside the other. We were facing eachother and walking in different directions. WHen the music stopped we were gonna take stupid selfies of ourselves with that person. I left my phone in the car so I couldn’t take any selfies, but I was on several of them. This was all just to get to know faces and have something to talk about later. So much fun!

I left after that to bond with my roomies, which I really did. Well, how much you can bond with someone in the middle of the night for a couple of hours. We talked a lot and it was nice but I got really tired and we didn’t say goodnight until 1am. And I have to get up at 7am tomorrow to do a hike right behind our house called the Architecture Graveyard. That will be fun. And then I will sleep on the beach for a while. I so look forward to that!Morro Rock That big rock is called the Morro Rock and the three towers in the right of the picture are the towers of a power plant in Morro Bay. I didn’t take my phone with me in the kayak so there are no pictures of the sea otters. But I promise, I did really see them and I was as close as 2m away from them.Golden StateOkay, so this is Highway 1 and on one side there is the typical Californian nature, the golden hills. On the other side there was a lot of green. So weird how one road can divide the landscape like this. It was completely different on the both sides. PCV, Poly Canyon VIllageThis is a parking lot close to campus and in the background, the grey buildings is Poly Canyon Village, also called PCV. I will take a better picture at the cute little village hopefully soon.

Hike, WoW, roommates

This post used to contain pictures, but due to new storage limitations from WordPress, I had to fix the problem and decided to create a new blog that works as an archive for all the posts from my two years in California. This full post can be found here.

What a day! So much has happened since I got up this morning it feels like several days crammed into one.

My day started with a hike, my first since the 12 mile (20km) in the dormant volcano Haleakala on Maui in January.I haven’t been working out at all this summer and doing this hike in the heat was hard, like real hard! The hike was called Avila Ridge and it was what it sounds like, a hike along a ridge near Avila Beach. It was a ”lagom” hike, but the way there was much harder than the way back. I survived though and that’s what’s matter. It took about 1,5h to walk about 2 miles.

Me and Johanna got dropped off at campus where we had another free lunch and then we went home to take a shower. The hike was just all sand so everything was dirty. I had time for fourty minutes of reading/resting before I had to go back to campus to start with the WoW thing.

This morning, right before I left for the hike I ran into one of my roommates, Lauren. She is the one I will share a bathroom with. She seems very nice too. The third girl I ran into quickly right before I headed to WoW (which by the way stands for Week of Welcome, not World of Warcraft – I am not getting myself involved with a third MMORPG). The third girl is Kelsey, from Iowa. We all talked for a while now when I got home from WoW, and they all seem nice. I look forward to getting to know them.

WoW groupsSo many many people at the I-field when finding their group. In total I think there are about 400 groups with around 10-15 people in each.

Anyway, Wow. That is a big deal here. We have activities from 8am to midnight every day, weekends 9am to 2am. Long days ahead. Today all of us left at 10pm so we could either go to bed or unpack which most of the people in the group hadn’t done yet since they moved in today.

It was a nice first day of WoW. We did some weird name games, the human knot, we had pizza and then went to the Big Fall Welcome thing at the stadium. That was such an American thing. The huge band was playing, there were cheerleaders and the President of the school held a speech and then there was a guy giving another speech about motivation. It was mostly directed to the freshmen, but it was still a very good speech and I will try and remember what he said.

Big Fall Welcome

After that we walked up to my building, Gypsum in PCV, because apparently they did the grouping so that all of us in #325 live in that building. A great way to get to know the people in the house, at least some of them. We listened to the guy taking care of the house and the CA (Community Advisors, who are students who live in the building and takes care of us and helps us whenever we need help, it’s great!).

After that I went up, talked to my roommates and felt a little bad for not contributing to the kitchen things. I will try to make it up to them by buying other things, like cleaning supplies, silverware and such things. We will have to talk about all this eventually. Like have a meeting where we set rules and such too.

I am going to bed now, I’m seeing double and I have another long day ahead of me with kayaking, a BBQ and something called WOW-A-RAMA which is a surprise for us WoWies (that is a word people in cars scream at us while they are driving my, it is like they think we are cute for being WoWies (Nollan at Chalmers University)).

Bank account, PolyCard, bike

This post used to contain pictures, but due to new storage limitations from WordPress, I had to fix the problem and decided to create a new blog that works as an archive for all the posts from my two years in California. This full post can be found here.

Today was very very warm again. And it started with a 2.5 mile walk to the bank. With no buses (because of the move in which by the way has made all of campus chaotic, the line of cars in to campus was so long today!!) and no bike I didn’t have another option. I was late and walked fast and was sweating a lot when I came to the bank where Johanna already were, starting up her account. Everything went smoothly and I put in $530. I had to withdraw most of it later in the day when we found out that we  could buy bikes for $150 (Johanna didn’t have that cash on her American bank account and couldn’t use her Swedish to withdraw so I let her borrow $200). Right after that we walked back up to campus where we checked in at the international center where we also had to sign up for an appointment with an advisor on Thursday morning to go through all our papers and check if everything is signed and ready and okay. Our next stop was to get PolyCard which is an ID card. It was a bit troublesome for me. My full name is Hanna Alexandra Camilla Bemm, but my given name is Alexandra, and that makes it really complicated here in the US, here Hanna is my name. I told the guy who took my photo and made the card that my given name is Alexandra but he said he could do nothing about it (even if I have put my preferred name in the system to Alexandra) so now my card says Hanna Bemm (like my email hbemm@…). Maybe I should have changed name to Hanna this year.

PoluCard

Our last stop of important things to do was to check in to WoW. There are over 400 groups, I am in 325 and our activities starts tomorrow at 3:30pm. I am so excited about that!! We got a bag and a t-shirt and information sheets.

No more plans for the day so we went downtown to do a little bit of shopping. I just bought a new pair of sunglasses and sunscreen. I found both of them at Ross, $4 for the sunglasses which are black and light blue on the inside, and the sunscreen was $7 instead of 9, win for me. We also did pedicures. That was way overdue. The woman doing my feet felt sorry for my blue big toe nail so she put on some diamonds on it to cover some of it up. It is a tiny flower and the blue/dark going out on the sides actually looks like petals. Very nice of her.

PedicureI got this after my first two days at Liseberg when I had too small shoes on. I will probably have this for another year…

Then we went home to the bike guy at Cal Poly. He sells bikes to international students and I and Johanna got one each. So great!! I haven’t been on a bike in probably five years, so it was a bit shaky at first, but it was nice, and it will be so fun going around town now. The breaks started making a lot of noise though so I will get help from him fixing it hopefully. It was awful!

My bike

Free dinner at campus for us WoW participants and then home where one of my roommates, Rachel from northern California, dropped most of her things off. She was very nice and so was her dad. They stayed for a while and we talked. The dad was excited for his daughter to have a Swedish roommate. I am so exotic, haha ;).

When they left I unpacked all my stuff so now my room is done. My drawers and the cabinet are so empty I think I need to go shopping for more clothes! One day soon 🙂

Backyard of my buildingMy building looks like a “U” and my apartment is in the middle. Anyway, this is the “backyard” in the middle of the U. Beautiful morning! California Polytechnic State UniversityThis picture was taken today, a little more than a year after I took this photo the first time. Main entrance to the schoolAngry BirdsMy roomMy room is done! It is very empty on the walls, so I am thinking about buying a big California Republic flag and put up over my desk. It would make the room less echo-y too.
Drawers under the bed
Too little clothes!! Rachel came with three suitcases and tons of other things. It was nice though, some things for the kitchen. She is by the way moving in tomorrow. She just dropped things off today.

Move in

This post used to contain pictures, but due to new storage limitations from WordPress, I had to fix the problem and decided to create a new blog that works as an archive for all the posts from my two years in California. This full post can be found here.

Another long day and all the sun has made me very very tired, even if I slept for probably 10 hours last night. I started the day by moving in to my room on campus. I got help from Johanna’s IPC (International Peerl Contact) (mine was in San Francisco) with moving my two suitcases to campus. Very very nice of her. I just put my things in my room, packed a beach bag and we all went to the IPC’s house so she could make breakfast to her roommates. After that she took me to Target to buy some bedding and needful things lige hangers and a blanket.

Right when we were done Johanna and one of her roommates came and picked me up and we went to Avila Beach which is the closest beach to SLO. It didn’t take more than 15 minutes to go there, but it would probably take 30-40 with a bike. It was not a huge beach and it had some seaweeds on it, but it was nice anyway. It felt so good being back on a Californian beach, even if the difference between San Diego and San Luis Obispo is pretty big. It was one of the most beautiful days up there people told me. My phone told me 29C and with the sea breeze it was perfect. The sky was completely blue and it was just a wonderful day. First we spent lika a couple of hours lying at the beach and going in the water. It was cold, but nice once we were in. Soon thereafter we went a little bit north of the beach where we rented stand up paddle boards (SUP). We had them for an hour and went along the coast to a lighthouse. On the way out we saw a lot of seals, sea lions and some pelicans. The seals were actually right off the beach where people were. Curious little things. One of the seals also came up like two meters in front of my board and I got so surprised I almost fell in (which I never did during that whole hour). It was kinda like on Hawaii, but with seals instead of giant turtles, which by the way gave me the same reaction.

I was really exhausted after that. Both from the hard workout, but also from being out in the sun for so long (4 hours maybe?). I haven’t been out in the sun for that long since Hawaii in January!

I did get burned today. In my face and on my chest. Even though I put sunscreen on three times! This is a sign that I need my Beach Defense SPF 30! Nivea sun 20 isn’t good enough. When I went to Target yesterday they were out of stock. And I forgot to look for it today. I will need to buy that as soon as possible unless I want to look like a crayfish.

Avila Beach

I got driven home where I put my bedding on the bed which wasn’t very easy (completely unnecessary by the way to bring my own sheets), but I succeeded eventually. The bed is very hard though so I hope I won’t have trouble sleeping. I haven’t unpacked anything else of my things yet. I am too tired. I have been trying to get my phone to know that I am in the US instead of in Sweden, because I can’t download important apps. It worked out eventually after a phone call with google and a lot of googling before that.

I also had a lot of troubles with connecting to the WiFi here. My computer’s been acting weirdly with new WiFi’s. With my deep-buried computer skills I solved it both at the hostel and here. I still haven’t gotten it to work on my phone, but that’s because of another reason. I hope I can get it to work soon, the data reception isn’t that good in here.

Kitchen + living roomI am standing right inside of the door to the apartment and this is the kitchen and the living room. To the right is a corridor with four locked bedrooms and two bathrooms. My messy roomThis is my bedroom right when I moved in with all my stuff. I am too tired to unpack anything yet. Maybe tomorrow or the day after that (depending on what WoW offers tomorrow night). View from my windowThe view from my room, it could definitely be worse :).

I am alone tonight, the other girls are coming tomorrow or the day after that, I don’t really remember when. I have lots of things to do tomorrow again. First get my American bank account, then I need to check in at the international center, then get my PolyCard, then check in to Week of Welcome and start the WoW activities at 2pm. I have also been invited to frat parties this week by one of Johanna’s IPC’s roommates. That will be fun ;).

Now I will go to bed for the first time in my new bed!
