Midterms, strep and line dancing

This post used to contain pictures, but due to new storage limitations from WordPress, I had to fix the problem and decided to create a new blog that works as an archive for all the posts from my two years in California. This full post can be found here.

Finally this horrible day is over. I felt better this morning, and I was prepared and ready to do the two midterms. But no, the first one went to hell and it will turn out as a big fat F. I had solved so many problems before and I felt that I knew everything. But then I see the test. I couldn’t solve a single one of the problems. I tried and I did write on some of them, but I don’t think I even wrote enough to get 50%. Most of it was because I usually sit for a while (since all the tests in Sweden always are four or five hours long) and try to figure it out. And most of the times I do that, but after thinking about the problem for sometimes 40 minutes. There was one problem today I tried doing that with and I figured it out ten minutes before the test ended, and I did not have enough time to write it all down. I am gonna talk to the professor about it. I did study, a lot, for this exam. And I don’t wanna get an F because he formulated the questions weirdly and gave us too many big problems. It is not fair.

I went to the second midterm where I sat down next to George, he asked how it went and I just looked at him and he totally understood what my face meant. Fortunately the architecture history one went better. I think it even went better than the last one. But we will see.

My next stop for the day was the Health Center and I was in and out in 20 minutes. The doctor told me that all my symptoms and the fact that I’ve been sick on and off for five weeks points towards mono. So I took a strep test and a mono test and later in the afternoon the doctor called me and told me it wasn’t mono (apparently you can have that several times by the way), but I had very high levels of white blood cells which means a bacterial infection, most likely strep. So I got penicillin and in a couple of days I should be fine. If it’s not better by Monday I will have to go back and take more tests for other things I guess. I have been feeling great today, my throat still hurts a bit, but it’s not as much as yesterday when I almost skipped class because I was crying from the pain.

The last four hours of my long day of horror (I had the exact same day three weeks ago)  was writing on the lab report. We handed it in 6 minutes before deadline which is the closest I’ve ever handed something in before.

It felt so great after. I didn’t even mind riding my bike home in the rain after. Yes, it’s been raining the whole day, just a drizzle, but definitely enough to get me wet.

I went home, did laundry and then headed to The Grad where there was a line dancing lesson for a while. It was fun, but way to hard. I don’t know if it is because I am sick and my coordination is the worst or if I am just not meant for dancing. After that I was just sitting down and watched everyone. It looks fun, but to know all those different dances will take time and I don’t have the ambition to put that much time into something. Maybe when I am older.

It was loud there so every time I talked to someone it made my throat worse and at the end I didn’t talk to anyone because my throat was on fire. Eventually me and Kelsey went home and stopped at SloDoCo on the way home to get some donuts. It’s dangerous having a 24/7 donut shop so close. But it was good.

Now I am home, coughing more than I have in three weeks and it sucks. I should probably go to bed and read some. I so look forward to tomorrow when I can sleep for as long as I can! Can’t wait!!

Line Dancing

Strep throat?

Yes, I think I might have streps, my throat hurts like crazy. (I am going to the Health Center tomorrow)

Tomorrow morning, starting at 7:40am, I have two midterms.

And in the afternoon I have a lab report due (which I basically just have the introduction to).

I so look forward to tomorrow.

NOT….

One month left

This post used to contain pictures, but due to new storage limitations from WordPress, I had to fix the problem and decided to create a new blog that works as an archive for all the posts from my two years in California. This full post can be found here.

I can’t believe it’s only one month left until I go to the Caribbean! I am stoked out of my mind! TO celebrate the one-month-left I spent the whole day in the library. But it wasn’t too bad. Studying here is a social thing, even if you spend 7 hours of a day off at the library, it’s a lot of socializing as well. I did some problems of the sample midterm questions for transportation engineering, and when George came I focused on the short essay questions for architecture history. It took (I think) four hours to do all of them. But it wasn’t too bad. And it feels great to have them done, last time I only did a few and I got an F on that part of the last midterm. This time I am planning on acing it!

I went home, had soup for dinner since my throat has been hurting today. On the front, not the side. Weird and extremely annoying! I watched The 100 while eating and then I solved one problem in transportation engineering. Then a bunch of people came over and I couldn’t focus so I hung out in the living room/kitchen for a while and then I was too tired to keep studying. So I will go and brush my teeth now and then read through my architecture history summaries before going to bed. I have another long day ahead of me tomorrow. Many hours of studying at the library and then sustainable environments class in the evening.

Midterm week #2

It’s that time of the quarter again. Midterm week (which is different for everyone depending on when the teacher schedule the tests, and I still don’t know why it is called midterms when they’re not occurring at the middle of the quarter, but randomly throughout it).

I went to the library at 9:30, studied non-stop until 3pm. Had a cookie for snack, went home at 4:30pm, took a nap, made Swedish lasagnette for dinner and then studied some more.

I’ve been feeling really crappy today, like all feverish. I noticed the other day that I actually brought a thermometer here and I do have a bit fever even after taking ibuprofen. It’s only half a degree too high, but it is still more than I usually have.

I hate that I’ve been sick on and off for the past five or four weeks now. It sucks pretty bad but I don’t know what to do about it. I think my immune system’s not used to this tempo and it can’t keep up. I hope Thanksgiving break will help me get better, otherwise the Caribbean trip will definitely do that.

Now I will go to bed and read Heir of Fire. I only have 100 pages left now. I wonder what I should read after that?!

Surf weekend in Ventura

This post used to contain pictures, but due to new storage limitations from WordPress, I had to fix the problem and decided to create a new blog that works as an archive for all the posts from my two years in California. This full post can be found here.

This whole weekend has been amazing. Lots and lots of things happened. And Poly Escapes gave me what it promised, a weekend away from Cal Poly, a weekend with no worries about school. But the weekend started way before that. Friday was full of fun things, like my errand trip with Kelsey. We returned a pair of Kelsey’s shoes, bought “costumes” for the frat party (Kelsey bought a Jane-like dress and I bought face paint), I got a gel manicure, we went to the post office so I could send a little something to one of my hostkids who turn 11 in five days and a thing for my brother, we picked up our Poly Escapes rentals, and went to the Health Center to leave my proof of vaccination (which isn’t even necessary since I won’t be here more than one academic year, but I still did it since they asked). It was a long run, many stops, but not more than four hours in total. We also did some snacks shopping for the trip. I always bring too much to trips, but better safe than sorry.

ManicureThis is what my nails look like after two days of surfing. Good job “@Nails”.

Back home I made two mudpies (=kladdkaka), one normal chocolate but also a white chocolate one. Apparently it was the Swedish national mudpie day. So I made two and they were delicious and very popular.

Kladdkakans dag 7 november

My plan after that was to study some, but that didn’t work out. I had to take a quick shower and then get ready for the party. I went to Phi Psi’s pledge party (the pledges organized the whole party) with a jungle theme. It was a great party, the decorations were awesome. The costumes not as much. I think I went most all-in with my tiger face paint. Other people just wore clothes with animal fur designs. The guys were Tarzan or just any other jungle dude. I got a lot of compliments but the hot house smudged it out later… I had a great evening but a little bit too much to drink. We were planning on taking it easy since we were going on the surf trip early the day after. And we stayed way late, but it was so much fun! I like that frat.

Jungle frat party Jungle frat party

I was just invited to another frat party tomorrow night, the one Luka, the Swedish guy from Chalmers, joined. It would be fun, but I think I have too much studying to do… We’ll see.

I slept for I think two or three hours before going on the trip yesterday morning. Not the best thing I could have done, but it was worth it. We left Cal Poly at 9 am, got to Mondo’s Beach north of Ventura at 11am and started surfing right away. I felt a bit nauseous, but I still managed to catch one or two waves. It was hard, the waves just died under all of us. I didn’t manage to stand up, only half stand one time. But it was still very fun. We had lunch break and I ate my whole footlong Subway sandwhich. Then we went out again. So much fun. But the small hangover mixed with waves and salt water wasn’t the best and I did feel a bit crappy, but it was still very enjoyable. I got some nice pictures with my GoPro as well. We played a game where we put all of our surfboards together so they formed like a boardwalk. Then one at a time ran across them all and jumped in at the end. It was hard! Then it was time to go to the camp site which was up in Carpinteria, like 20 minutes away. It was a nice camp site very close to the water. We made a fire, the leaders made amazing dinner for all of us, chicken wok with pineapple and rice. Very very fancy and good camp food! We even got desert, homemade brownie and homemade ice cream. So delicious! Before we ate though, we took a walk on the beach in the sunset. It was so beautiful. The beach was really wet so the sunset was reflected in both the water and the sand and made the sunset enormous. So very very pretty! But this was at 5:30pm so it was both dark and chilly for many hours before bedtime.

After the desert, we played games and sang campfire songs with a guitar. So nice. But I was so tired so I couldn’t stop thinking about going to bed, which we did at 10pm, not too late which was good.

The games we played were so much fun. One of them was called Interview. One person left the group, the others decided on a person and an action that the person who left were supposed to be. When the person who left came back we all asked questions, the guy answered the questions without knowing the answers and was gonna try and figure out who he/she was. Tigger flossing his teeth made some very funny questions. Does it hurt? Do you bleed when you do it? Do you do it in the morning, or evening? Does things stuck? What do you do best? Haha, so much fun. Another game we played was a game of questions. One person asked another one a random question and the other person answered with the first thing that came to mind. And then that answer would be the answer to all the questions asked after. Everyone could ask anything. And I mean anything. The person had to answer with that same answer but without laughing. When the person laughed that person asked a random question to someone else and it started over. Like if someone had the word Tortilla. What do you put in your burrito? Tortilla. What turns you on? Tortillas. With what do you brush your teeth? Tortillas. And so on. Hilarious!! Another very funny game we played was rapid questions. We sat in a circle and one person started by asking the next person a random question, it could be exactly anything. Then the next person is supposed to ask another question to the next person, without answering, laughing, hesitating or repeating a question. If you do, you’re out and the game goes on until there is only one left. Also very funny and a lot of laughs!

I decided to sleep in a tent tonight. Four people in each tent and I slept like a baby through the whole night. Some people, like Kelsey, slept under the stars. It would have been cool, but I wanted a good night’s sleep. I woke up a few times from the very noisy train, but fell asleep fast again. We got up at 7am, got served breakfast; scrambled eggs, bananas, sausage patties, Canadian bacon and tea. Yummy!

Back to the beach where we started our day with a yoga session on the beach. Very needed! Then 1.5 hour in the water before going to lunch in Ventura. We went to a tacos places in East Ventura and the shrimp/crab/avocado burrito I had was the best burrito I’ve ever had. Oh my gosh!! Ventura by the way is so pretty. I was in love with North Country San Diego before seeing Ventura. But now I totally feel like I want to move to Ventura in the future. Then the two hour trip started back home. I fell asleep for a little while but it was hard staying asleep. I will go to bed as soon as I am done with this super long post and get around 8 hours of sleep before a full day of studying tomorrow. I think I am gonna have to survive on caffeine pills this week if I am gonna have time to do everything on my to do list for the midterms on Thursday.

Last surf dag at Mondos Beach

I got home, had some mudpie, talked to my roommates, looked at the GoPro pictures and uploaded the best to Facebook and now I just found myself a travel companion for Jamaica. Yay! It is a guy I got to know in Los Angeles last year, who now lives in San Francisco. That will be fun.

Now I just have to convince my mom to come to Puerto Rico and someone else to Dominican Republic, or maybe mom there too. The flight between DR and PR is very cheap and so is the accommodation costs (which will be my Christmas gift to her, and maybe some of the flight cost too). I am crossing my fingers. But I know that I will have a great time anyway.

I don’t look forward to this week, it will be horrible. But this upcoming weekend will probably be as good as the last one after the midterms. No worries, just fun activities like Six Flags and skydiving! Yay!

Last day of class for a week

I like the random American holiday’s. Next Tuesday we don’t have any class because of Veteran’s Day. So that means a very long weekend. Which means more time to study for the two midterms coming up on Thursday.

It feels like studying is all I do lately. I really don’t mind, but I feel like a boring person for repeating myself in this blog. But it will get better! This Sat-Sun is my surf trip with Poly Escapes. Next Friday is Six Flags Magic Mountain, the Monday after that I am going skydiving, the next weekend is nothing so far. Then comes Thanksgiving and I think I will go down to LA to be with Kelsey’s aunt and cousin since I don’t have anything else to do (my host family had plans so I have to come down and visit them in the beginning of January instead), or maybe just stay at home alone (I miss spending time with myself). Weekend after that will be all about studying because that next upcoming week (five weeks from now) is finals week! And after my final final is written I will go to the Caribbean. I love having lots of things to look forward to. In there I hope I will be good enough to play beach volleyball and work out at the gym. Maybe do a hike?

Tomorrow morning I will skype with mom, then study some, run some errands with Kelsey, study some more, and then probably go to a frat party with Jungle theme. That will be fun. But I am really super excited about the surf trip!! I can’t wait to use my wetsuit again and see if I miraculously got better at surfing while being in Sweden and away from waves.

GoPro Hero4 Silver

This post used to contain pictures, but due to new storage limitations from WordPress, I had to fix the problem and decided to create a new blog that works as an archive for all the posts from my two years in California. This full post can be found here.

My new toy is here and it is amazing. It is so tiny though and I need to figure out what the main settings should be because it’s gonna be in a plastic shell and I can’t use advanced settings without the touch screen. I am so excited to try it this weekend when I will go surfing in Ventura with Poly Escapes.

Other things that happened today were the library… And that’s it. I was there all day today, I just went home to make dinner before my 7pm class. But I did manage to do most of my homework for Transportation Engineering which is due tomorrow morning. There was one problem I didn’t even bother to try. I hope the professor doesn’t choose that one to grade. He only takes one problem and grades thoroughly and the rest just by looking at the effort.

Class today was about sustainable development within food systems. It was interesting but I was tired and it was hard to focus. When I went home I finished my homework, played with my GoPRo and now all of a sudden it is almost 2am… It is not gonna be fun waking up in 4 hours. But the homework needed to be done, and I kinda had to make a cheat sheet for the midterm next week. Having all the equations written down will help me tomorrow when I will start studying for it tomorrow or on Friday. So much to do all the time. But I am still happy, I am in California! (And my cold is almost on its way out of my body!)

First GoPro picFirst picture ever taken with my brand new GoPro Hero 4 Silver. Can’t wait to use it outside of my tiny dorm room! GoPro APPThere is an app from where I can control the camera, like see on my phone screen what the camera sees and then take photos with my camera from my phone. Super cool!

Studying

This morning was scary. I have passed out (like for real when I get unconcious) three times in my whole life. And after this morning, if I didn’t know the signs for it that number would have been 7. Okay, it wouldn’t… But whatever. In the timespan of an hour I had to lay down on the ground four times. First it happened when I was making breakfast. I had to sit down for a few minutes, but when I stood up slowly I could only do so for a couple of minutes before I had to sit down again. But I managed to take the food into my room and sit down. But that wasn’t enough. About ten minutes later I couldn’t even sit on my chair, I had to lay down on the floor for five minutes. And that same thing happened again. I was afraid I wasn’t gonna make it to class so I emailed my teacher, but at 7:25 I felt okay and rode my bike there anyway and wasn’t even late. I’ve been feeling crappy today as well, but I didn’t feel like passing out again which is good.

I didn’t go home during my four hour break, so first I had lunch with Kelsey and then I went to the library to try and do the homework. But three hours later I had only finished 1 out of 8 problems. And at three I had to go to my lab class. Those homeworks are stupid. Way too hard. But I am gonna work on it the whole day tomorrow!

After the lab I finished my paper but I am not gonna hand it in just yet. I wanna reread it at least one more time. And after that I have been trying to summarize the last few weeks in Architecture History. The midterm is coming up and I want to be prepared. Since I won’t be able to study this weekend I wanna start early. For those of you who don’t know, I am going on a surf trip to Ventura with Poly Escapes. I am super excited and I will get my GoPro camera tomorrow so I will be able to document the whole thing :).

Now I will go to bed and read, I haven’t done that in forever so my eReader automatically turned itself off, which it does after like three days of being inactive. I have to start reading again, otherwise my 800 books long list will never shrink.

Another cold

I just got rid of the cough I had and now I have another cold. This time it’s not the throat though, but my nose and sinuses. The ClearQuil works, but when I wake up it feels like half my head is gonna explode. And during the day I feel feverish and I didn’t accomplish much today unfortunately. I was gonna get up at 10am to first finish my paper and then start on my homework for Transportation Engineering. I snoozed for 40 minutes and then realized that I would not be able to leave the bed for at least two more hours, so I went back to sleep and woke up at 12:30 sometime and went up for some breakfast at 1pm.

I wrote a lot on my paper and now I only have a short ending to the paper to write. So that is good. But I didn’t do the homework, I was feeling way too crappy for that. So I will buckle up and do it tomorrow instead.

I bought some very expensive ice cream at the Village Market and now I will move my computer to bed, watch The Flash and eat ice cream. Hopefully fall asleep early…

Soccer: Cal Poly vs. UCSB

This post used to contain pictures, but due to new storage limitations from WordPress, I had to fix the problem and decided to create a new blog that works as an archive for all the posts from my two years in California. This full post can be found here.

How did November get here so fast?? I’ve been here for almost 2 months now, but it really doesn’t feel like it. So weird. I don’t like it. It has been pretty fall-y the past two days. It’s been cold and I’ve worn jeans and a sweater even during the day. I hope it will get warmer soon again.

Today’s big thing was the soccer game and before that I didn’t do anything else than waking up at noon and then going grocery shopping with Kelsey. My sinuses has been congested today as well, but I bought ClearQuil, pills that will help sinus & congestion. I hope it works, I don’t wanna get sick again.

So going to a big soccer game, the biggest of the year actually (they say that Cal Poly and UCSB has the biggest sports rivalry within college), was probably not the best idea ever. But I didn’t scream and I do feel okay. I feel a bit feverish to be honest, but I hope that will be gone tomorrow. I am off, but I really need to finish my paper and start on my Transportation Engineering homework.

Anyway, the game was fun, except that the level of the game was pretty low. The arena was filled to the limit and everyone was super into the game so it was definitely a fun experience. For some stupid reason I forgot to put on my Cal Poly hoodie and went to the game in my new knitted sweater instead. Stupid. But it is warmer so it was nice. A lot of people meant that we stood like packed herring so it wasn’t too cold. We lost by 2-0 and we missed a penalty shot.

Alex G Spanos Stadium

I am gonna try and go to a lot of Cal Poly games. Not many within each sport, but at least one in each. There are a lot of sports, but the ones I want to go to are women’s volleyball, men’s baseball and basketball. I just love the school spirit everyone here has. So different from Sweden.

Goodbye pumpkinsBefore I went grocery shopping with Kelsey we brought our pumpkins to the top of the parking structure and kicked them off the ledge. That was so much fun, haha!Cauliflower-spinach-feta-cod casseroleI also cooked tonight again, cauliflower/spinach/feta/cod casserole. I made the mistake of putting cod in there so it got very runny. But it was still very good and Toby enjoyed a homecooked meal for once. He will pay me back by cooking for me.
