A day at Currumbin Wildlife Sancturay can never be anything but amazing. When we brought mom there, that day was not an exception.
There was the rainbow lorikeet feeding, pelican and eel feeding, Wild Skies bird show, the new rescued radiated tortoises, very active tasmanian devils, an injured bat in the hospital which had an unusual story, lots of wild bats and water dragons as well as Boss Hog up and about showing off his massive 5 metres and 800 kgs.
The pelican and eel feeding is always so fascinating. Did you know that eels can wander on land because the waterhole they currently are in is not good enough? Did you know that they feed on animals on shore? Or that you as a fisherman need to be careful when standing close to water as they listen to your sounds on the ground and they can definitely attack you?
Pelicans are Australia’s largest birds with a wingspan of up to 3 metres. However, did you know they only weigh around 8-10kg?
We saw several today make graceful water landings. It looks hilarious when they slide on their feet before making a full stop.
At the sneak peak at the wildlife hospital, the patient of the day was a flying fox.
It had been in the most unfortunate accident. While it was flying, a kid down on the ground kicked a football up high, accidently hit the bat and it fell to the ground. How unlucky is that? Poor thing. It didn’t seem to be too injured, but while examining her, they did see that she had a defected wing. It was all crooked. But as she had been flying perfectly fine up until getting hit by a football, she had learnt to live with it.
All the animals coming through gets a name, and they asked if anyone had a name for this little girls. No one gave a suggestion, so I did: Footy. I wonder if they used that traumatizing name for her.
