Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is truly a special place on the Gold Coast. Having been twice in the short period of time we’ve lived here is a testament to that. Taking mother in law was a very nice experience!

With a day full of shows and animal talks, there is always something to see and do. The pelican and eel feeding is extraordinary since most people have never experienced that before.

The WildSkies show including birds is really informational with engaging staff talking about the importance of keeping Australias skies healthy and showing off some really incredible birds, including the beautiful Red-Tailed Black Cockatoos and huge Macaws as well as Australias largest apex predator the Wedge-Tailed Eagle, which was a bit shy today. We were fortunate enough to see it more the first time we went, but this time it only flew across the audience once, mostly because something else was flying around in the area.

Then of course there are the marsupials I am positive every single human on Earth loves: koalas and kangaroos! ❤️

Seeing them in the wild is the absolute best and I will never ever forget when we saw the momma with her baby joey feeling so completely safe that she decided to climb down from one tree and walk straight towards us, very calmly, and climb the tree right next to us. If you want to read about it again, it is here. With that being said, the wildlife sanctuary is not the regular zoo. Their hospital takes care of 14 000 wild animals every year and releases them as soon as they are well enough again.

The kangaroos are super chill and when they decide to leave their secure and human-free zone, you can carefully pet them if you want. They are so soft!

This lizard was brand new that day in the sanctuary and would most likely be released three weeks later if all went well with his health.

Boss Hog is one of Australia’s largest salties in captivity. Almost 5m and 800kg and has been in captivity since 1980’s when he killed a $10,000 Brahman stud bull. I guess he is living a better life now than dead.

Another favorite animal of mine: red pandas! I was so excited to see it being fed, but it just stood like this for a few minutes, staring at the food, before deciding to lay down and sleep again.

And this Kookaburra who definitely stole the show right next to the panda! And then we had the most beautiful dusk after an incredible day! Gold Coast delivers.
